West Melton teenager Maddie Collins has become a household name as her family tries to raise $750,000 to get her to the United States for a kidney transplant. Maddie’s family open up on nine-year battle
By Georgia O’Connor-Harding SIX SPORTS are to be catered for in Rolleston’s new indoor multi-court sports facility. Netball, basketball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis and futsal courts, targeting community-level sport, are to be included in the new facility to be sited at Foster Park. THe complex aimed to cater for Rolleston’s booming population is to be built some time between 2018 to 2028 as part of the district council’s Long Term Plan. It will include netball, basketball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis and futsal courts targeting community-level sport. It is also to have changing rooms and toilets to cater for outdoor fields used by clubs including the Selwyn United Football Club. It was covered in the Canterbury Spaces and Places plan presented by Sport Canterbury to the Greater Christchurch Partnership Committee on Friday. Sport Canterbury has partnered with the district council to plan the facility. •Turn to page 5

TEENAGER MADDIE Collins has received a lot of publicity over the past year or so as her family strives to raise enough money which may keep her alive. But who is Maddie Collins and her family? Today (pages 8, 9, 10), Maddie and her mum Sarah talk with reporter Bridget Rutherford about their journey. It is a compelling read. Life has all sorts of suprises and for the Collins family that came in late October, 2008. Maddie woke up one morning with puffy eyes. The family thought it was an allergic reaction to grass and hay. Fast forward to 2017 and 13-year-old Maddie is fighting for her life. What she had was a kidney disease. Her family has been fighting a battle since. Police radar in on drink drivers leading up to Xmas

By Georgia O’Connor-Harding and Andrew King POLICE ARE preparing to launch their Christmas campaign to stop drink driving in Selwyn. The aim of the campaign is to reduce the number of alcoholrelated crashes in the district by encouraging people to plan a safe ride home before going out to drink. It comes after a man crashed a vehicle near Southbridge and recorded more than Pete Stills three times the legal limit on Friday. Emergency services were called to the scene on Collins Rd at about 9pm, but the driver escaped major injuries. Police said the tradesman had been drinking “all afternoon” at a hotel before heading towards his home in Southbridge when he crashed. “He was lucky he didn’t kill himself,” Senior Constable

Andy Williamson said. Police allege the man recorded more than 900 micrograms of alcohol per litre. The legal limit is 250mcg/L. Senior Sergeant Pete Stills said police have been catching a number of intoxicated drivers in Rolleston and the wider Selwyn area in the past few weeks. Drivers had been caught driving at about 800 and 1000mcg/L
of breath over the legal limit. Senior Sergeant Stills said the high alcohol readings blown by drivers was really disappointing. “We would rather not catch anybody, we would rather get the message out don’t drink and drive,” he said. The district council’s road safety co-ordinator Ngaire Tinning said between December
last year and January nine alcohol-related crashes were recorded in the district. Nine crashes were also recorded in the district between August and October this year. The Christmas campaign will be similar to previous years with hotels and clubs throughout Selwyn supporting it. It encourages people to use courtesy vans provided by hospitality outlets and have a sober driver organised. Senior Sergeant Stills said it is very important because people’s lives are at stake. Meanwhile, police are cracking down on drivers not stopping at stop signs again. “We have been focusing on Shands and Selwyn Rd again because it has got bad there. There is a high volume of traffic,” Senior Sergeant Stills said. News Youth needs subject of meeting
THE SELWYN Waihora Zone Committee will discuss whether a youth zone committee meeting could be held next year. The youth engagement team, EnviroSchools and members of the zone team will explore existing youth and school projects that align with existing zone committee priorities. A decision will be made at the zone committee meeting tomorrow. Existing relationships with non-profit organisations will be explored to highlight any initial collaborations potential and themes of project ideas that reflect the needs and aspirations of the youth in the community. The working group for the youth zone committee idea will develop a project plan and report back to the zone committee at the February meeting to showcase various partners involving youth and projects as well as the pathway for the end of 2018 meeting. If the youth zone committee is approved a working group will be established this month. A report will come back to the zone committee in February before various project items are developed and delivered between March and September.

Big crowd likely at Hororata By Georgia O’Connor-Harding THE HORORATA Highland Games will be held on one of the most important days commemorated in modern history – Armistice Day. The games known as one of the largest Scottish festivals to take place in the Southern Hemisphere will be held at the Hororata Domain this Saturday. Event manager Cindy Driscoll said the Hororata Community Trust felt strongly about acknowledging Armistice Day. She said a lot of people do not know about its importance and the games offer a good platform for people to learn more about it. “In New Zealand we put a lot of focus on Anzac Day and the other significant events all get wrapped into that,” Mrs Driscoll said. Armistice Day is commemorated each year to mark the end of World War 1. After four years, the war came to an end with the signing of the armistice between Germany and the Allied Powers on November 11, 1918. On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh

News Highland Games The event was created in 2011 from the community’s desire to take charge of its own future following the devastation suffered during the Canterbury earthquakes. This year marks the seventh annual running of the event. It attracts more than 500 competitors who will compete in highland dancing, piping and drumming, tug of war, highland spin, small bore shooting, amateur heavy athletics and the Oceania heavyweight championship. Mrs Driscoll said pre-sales for the games are well up on previous years, competition numbers are at capacity and more than 200 volunteers will be involved. A record crowd of 10,000 people attended the games last year. Mrs Driscoll said this event would not be able to take place without support from the community. THe district council’s major projects property manager John Reid said there is no doubt Selwyn is a high priority area lacking multi-courts. A feasibility study has been taken over the past 18 months to determine what sports groups need and what they would pay for hireage. “We want this to be community-focused as opposed to high performance,” Mr Reid said.
Mr Reid said high performance facilities come at a large cost because of the specifications needed to host international sports. It is planned the Metro Sports Facility will fulfil this need for the Canterbury region. “THe thing I am pushing hard with council is we get the maximum number of courts,” Mr Reid said. But five-year-old Maddie woke up that morning with puffy eyes. Her parents Sarah and Adam didn’t think anything of it. They had just moved to West Melton from Spreydon, wanting a more rural lifestyle. “We thought ‘great, we’ve just moved rural and she’s allergic to grass and hay’,” Mrs MansonCollins said.

They took Maddie to their GP, who said she may have something called nephrotic syndrome – a kidney disease which causes the body to excrete too much protein in urine. “I just said ‘oh, don’t be silly, just give us some antihistamines, we’re going camping tomorrow’. And he said ‘I’m very serious, you need to take her to the hospital now’.” The family didn’t go camping. And they haven’t been since. Since then, the 13-year-old has undergone more than 50 operations, been on life support twice, had both kidneys removed, one failed transplant and undergoes dialysis every night. She has been in hospital more than 300 times – the longest stint was for four months – and travels to Auckland’s Starship Hospital routinely every seven or eight weeks. “I do dialysis 12 hours a night, every night,” Maddie said. “When we go away we don’t typically take the machine, so we

do manual bags – four over the day. It’s annoying because you can’t have sleepovers, unless you want to do manual bags, but I’m not allowed to do it.” Maddie’s parents and a family
friend are the only people who can operate her dialysis machine. They have two generators just in case there is a power cut. The first time Maddie was put on life support was six months
after her diagnosis. She had been on steroids and low-dose chemotherapy drugs, then one night, she woke with a sore tummy and they took her to hospital.

plucky daughter a better life She had spontaneous bacterial peritonitis, where all the fluid around her organs had become infected. After a week in the high dependency unit, Maddie was transferred to the ward. Things were looking up and Mrs Manson-Collins was sent home to get some sleep at 8.30pm. At 11pm, the hospital rang to say they had transferred Maddie back to HDU, but said there was nothing to worry about. Then, at 5.30am, the hospital called again. “They said ‘Sarah get here now, don’t get a coffee, don’t have a shower, just get in the car and get here now’.” The infected fluid had overflowed into Maddie’s lungs. The five-year-old was gasping for breath and transferred to the intensive care unit where she was put on life support. She was transferred to Starship where she stayed on life support for a week. In spite of the set back, the family and doctors were optimistic they could save her kidneys. But in December 2009, Maddie needed a port inserted in her chest so medication could be injected easily.

from Christmas 2009. Mrs Manson-Collins had to do a routine mammogram as part of the process, which discovered she had breast cancer. “I said to her ‘have you found something’. And she said ‘did you come by yourself?’ And I said ‘did you find something?’ She said ‘yes, you’ve got cancer and it’s really bad.’” Within seven months, Mrs Manson-Collins had a mastectomy and chemotherapy, and Mr Collins donated one of his kidneys to Maddie. “It was pretty rough on our older two children – is mum going to die this year from cancer? Is my sister going to die this year with renal failure?” She said it was hard to juggle treatments, but Maddie’s health came first. Although Mrs MansonCollins has been cleared of cancer, she still has regular oncology appointments. At nine, Maddie finally started school at St Margaret’s College. But they began to see signs that Maddie’s body was rejecting her father’s kidney. She became very unwell and they had to remove it. •Turn to page 10

Are we nearing the end?’ We’re pretty open about dying and death and Maddie’s fully aware of those implications, and that is a reality for us,” Mrs Manson-Collins said. Maddie said she did not like to think about death. But sometimes she had to. When she first had her antibodies tested, there was a two per cent chance of matching anyone in New Zealand. “We realised we wanted more for Maddie, we wanted life. Just to sit here and wait for a kidney is not okay for a child, dialysis isn’t great for a child, it isn’t great for an adult.” They started looking for alternative and visited The John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, United States, which has been looking at new kinds of transplants. But it will cost $750,000. They have raised just under $300,000. Maddie’s siblings Tomas, 21, and Georgia, 19, do not match, but they could take part in a “paired exchange” where they

donate a kidney and Maddie can get an American one. Mrs Manson-Collins said they were “blown away” with the support they had received. “As much as it’s about fundraising for Maddie, it’s also about raising awareness of a lack of organ donation here in New Zealand and what we can do to improve that system.” Maddie’s condition has taken a toll on the family. Mrs Manson-Collins gave up her job as a logistics manager for a national and international race
car team four months after Maddie’s diagnosis. Mr Collins was a race car engineer for Toyota Racing Series and Formula 5000, but has stopped working. “It’s got to the point now we’re just both so exhausted because it’s been going so long. It takes two of us to keep on top of everything,” Mrs Manson-Collins said. “Financially, it’s taken a huge toll. Before Maddie was diagnosed, we were both working, we had a retirement fund and retire-
ment plans. That’s all gone now.” She said Georgia, who works at footwear retailer Hannahs while she decides what to study, and Tomas, an electrician apprentice, had been “amazing” and were very protective of their sister. The family doesn’t have expectations because it is too disappointing if it doesn’t happen. The family suffered a disappointing blow earlier this year when they were offered a bogus $1.5 million pledge to help get Maddie to the US. Maddie hasn’t been to school
in months. She’s been too sick. But she is about to go back for four days a week, with a mix of Southern Health School and St Margaret’s teaching for the “social interaction”. She wants to become a vet and has already been helping out at her local clinic. “We went to the vet to get my cat fixed and as soon as I walked in I thought ‘I really want to work here, it’s so cool.’ One day I asked if I could come and work for a day, I watched surgeries and got a dog’s teeth cleaned, did vaccinations, and I loved it so much, so from then on it started.” She is used to being around animals, they have three labradors, a poodle, cats and her pony Trig, who she recently won the North Loburn Equestrian spring dressage tournament on. Although riding may come with some risks, her parents decided they would not wrap her in “cotton wool”. Maddie wants to help others by raising awareness for her disease and organ donation. “There are people out there who are unfortunate to have this disease and it’s good to help.” •To donate or find out more, visit maddiecollins. co.nz

News Young directors making their mark By Julia Evans WEST MELTON’S Nina Hogg could soon be following in the footsteps of Kiwi director Taika Waititi. While Waititi has been smashing box offices records with his new movie Thor: Ragnarok, Nina and Simon Brown have created the short film A Perfect Child. The St Margaret’s and Christ’s college students won the award for best senior fiction at the Australian Teachers of Media Awards in Melbourne. It tells the story of Ava, played by St Margaret’s student Tigerlily Perry, a girl who has lost her parents in a car crash and has been sent to an orphanage. She meets Madam Murphy (Eilish Moran, of The Court Theatre) who runs the establishment in a disciplined and firm manner. Ava soon befriends Lauren (Alice Taylor, of St Margaret’s), but finds out that things are not what they seem at the orphanage. When Lauren suddenly turns on her, Ava discovers a laboratory full of clones which the orphanage is trying to make into perfect specimens so they can be adopted more easily.

Taking home an award didn’t come easily. The 18min film took a year to produce from start to finish and involved more than 65 students, mentors and teachers. Simon said the main challenge came from the editing process. A Perfect Child went up against 550 entries in the ATOM awards from across Australia and New Zealand. “The prize-giving was very nerve-racking, especially when
Nina and I had to go up on stage to collect the award. We didn’t realise that we were required to give a short speech and had to improvise but it was taken very well, which was a relief,” Simon said. Nina said many students put their life and soul into the film. “I hope our two schools (St Margaret’s and Christ’s) continue this collaboration as a way to foster interest in the film industry and highlight the talent of
our friends and fellow students,” she said. The ATOM presentation was hosted by Australian TV presenter Walt Collins and was followed by a screening of the winning productions at the SAE Institute, Melbourne. The awards

Explosion of colour from Rolleston By Georgia O’Connor-Harding AN EXPLOSION of colour could be seen across Rolleston skies in celebration of Guy Fawkes on Saturday. The Rolleston Fireworks display has been deemed a success with more than 15,000 attending the show. It was the second year the event had been held at Foster Park instead of Rolleston Reserve. The event cost about $70,000 to put on with $30,000 of fireworks set off. Rolleston fireworks organising committee member Jens Christensen said the event was touch and go at one stage because of the wind. “It was absolutely howling down for a while. Then when the fireworks went off it was as still as anything,” he said. Mr Christensen said schools and community groups running fundraisers at the event were happy with how the evening went but it was too early to estimate how much was raised. A LINCOLN High School student has taken part in an international competition. Year 12 student Taylin Smith was in Kunming, China, recently competing in the 10th World Chinese Speech Competitions. It comes after she won the National New Zealand Chinese Bridge Speech Competition earlier this year with her prize being a trip to China to compete along with her teacher Terina Yee. The international competition involves about 320 students and teachers from 96 countries. Contestants are required to sit a computer-written test on aspects of China. Other activities include testing students on their listening skills and having to perform two short speeches individually before taking part in a talent show. The school’s head of learning area, languages and Selwyn cluster co-ordinator Rachel Austin said Taylin performed well. She said although Taylin did not get into the top-20s of the competition, they finished within the top half

of the contestants and she was proud of their performances. Taylin was also asked to participate in the Jasmine fan dance for the closing ceremony. The school recently celebrated National Mandarin Language Week. Ms Austen said the number of students learn-

The initiative is a $10 million fund set up by the Government to increase second language learning for students across the country. A reader responds to Selwyn Times article on issues the Darfield population faces as it continues to expand Grant Prescott –My main concern here is if the district council decides to implement such a system how will they manage payment. You surely cannot include it as a straight increase in rates across the board as a lot of properties would not get access to the system outside of the township. It would be inappropriate for non-users to be hit with the rate. We have had a large number of developers secure significant profit over the years and the district council should have been charging a cost to these developers with a view to starting a reticulated system which would offset costs. Lack
of planning by the district council seems to be the problem. A reader responds to Selwyn Times’ article on the district council’s annual report for the 2016/17 year Will Janssen – Yes, the report thus far sounds good. Perhaps the district council could open its wallet and add some much needed additions to the Selwyn Aquatic Centre?

Lincoln High awards sporting talent SPORTS A SOLID year in a variety of sports is why Lucy Turner (right) was crowned sportsperson of the year at the Lincoln High School awards. The talented student is sharp at athletics, quick on the hockey turf and a champion in the equestrian saddle. Lucy’s trophy cabinet will be bulging after a stellar year which included awards in the 1500m, second in the school’s athletics champs and most valuable player in the first XI hockey team. Her achievements also include selection in the Canterbury under-18 women’s hockey team, being the national under-21 two-star equestrian eventing champion and selection in the under-21 eventing trans-Tasman team. She is also captain of the girls first XI hockey team as well as each of the school’s equestrian teams.

He has used these talents, along with his swimming ability, to compete in duathlons and triathlons at the Canterbury, South Island and New Zealand secondary school levels. •Year 11 sportsperson of the year – Millie Thompson Millie has shown talent in equestrian, touch and hockey. She won the Canterbury secondary schools dressage competition, was named the top rider in the highest grade and was selected in both the Canterbury area dressage team and the New Zealand one-day under-21 development squad. Milligan takes two podiums in opening Toyota 86 round By Gordon Findlater PREBBLETON’S JACK Milligan experienced a mixed bag of results in the opening round of the Toyota 86 Championship at Pukekohe over the weekend. Milligan, 21, will go into the next round of the championship in second after a win and a podium finish in his three races. “It’s a good start to the championship. It’s a long season so we’re happy to come away in second and some good championship points,” said Milligan. Fellow Prebbleton racer Jaden Ransley was looking good in race one when he moved into the lead on lap 10 before dropping back to second. He then made a mistake through turn one and slid into the outside wall. Ransley finished seventh in races two and three. Milligan got his campaign off to the perfect start in race one on Saturday. The apprentice builder was in third when he pulled off a great passing manoeuvre to take the lead in the space of one corner. “It happened pretty quickly. The two guys in front of me were battling and I could sense something was going to happen,” said Milligan. He went on to win race one

ahead of Auckland’s Connor Adam and Christchurch’s Tom Alexander. In race two, Mulligan started from eighth on the grid but moved up to third by turn two. He moved to second and sat on the tail of defending champion Alexander for the remainder of the race. In the final race of the weekend, Milligan was in second behind Alexander before he went around the outside of the leader
at the end of the back straight. However, Alexander held his line and Milligan slid onto the grass. Trying to regain the places he had lost, Milligan slid wide again in the same spot, re-joining the race sideways and nudging Michael Scott off the circuit. He eventually finished the race in eighth. Round two of the championship will see Milligan and Ransley head to Taupo in early December.

Brettkelly goes down to NZ amateur title winner By Gordon Findlater FOR THE second year running, Hororata club’s Dominic Brettkelly was eliminated from the New Zealand amateur golf championship by the tournament winner. On Friday, Brettkelly, 17, went into the 18th hole at Russley one up in his round of 16 match with championship favourite and eventual winner, Daniel Hillier, of Wellington. On the 18th, Hillier chipped in for an eagle, taking the match to a playoff. He then claimed victory with a birdie on the 19th hole of the match. “I knew I was a massive underdog, but I didn’t feel any pressure. I knew if I could get under his skin and put some pressure on then I’d be a decent chance,” said Brettkelly. On the first two days of the championship, Brettkelly shot rounds of 74 and 71 to be in a tie for 18th, qualifying him for the top 32 which progressed to the match play elimination section of the championship. On Friday morning, he defeated Harewood’s Scott Manyweathers in a marathon match which went 23 holes before a winner was found. This

left Brettkelly with just a 20min break before teeing off to play Hillier in the next round. On Friday alone, Brettkelly played a titanic 43 holes at Russley. “It was a pretty long day. I wasn’t hitting my driver straight so I made life hard for myself, but it was a really cool experience. There were a lot of people that came out to watch the match with Daniel,” said Brettkelly. Last year, Brettkelly was defeated in the round of 32 by eventual champion Louis Dobbelaar. Brettkelly will travel to Invercargill this week to represent Canterbury at the men’s South Island interprovincial.

Records fall at Selwyn Running Festival By Gordon Findlater A NUMBER of records fell in Leeston at the weekend as nearly 400 runners and walkers took part in the Selwyn Running Festival. The event, now in its seventh year, consisted of a half marathon, 10km, 5km and kids dash events. The blistering sun and high winds didn’t slow the competition down, as records fell in both the men’s and women’s half marathon, as well as the men’s and women’s 10km races. The festival
attracted a large number of locals and some top runners from around Canterbury with the event doubling as the Canterbury Athletics half marathon championship. “The pointy end of the race is usually well represented by those top runners. The event also really connects with our local runners, especially with the shorter races and the kids dash. It’s really great to have all the local schools involved,” said event organiser Michael Wilson. The men’s half marathon title was defended by Timaru’s Samuel Wreford in a race record
time of 1hr 7min 50sec. He finished ahead of Sean Eustace and Lincoln’s Ieuan van der Peet. The race record in the women’s half marathon was broken by Christchurch’s Angela Whyte, who finishing in a time of 1hr 24min 40sec. Oska Baynes (30min 15sec), and Marisa Ruhter (37min 33sec) won the men’s and women’s 10km races respectively, and both set new race records. They get to keep the profit they make and Mayor Sam Broughton will match what they make (up to $100) and donate it to a local charity. Mayor Broughton will be choosing the 10 winning 10-year olds on Friday 10 November. They will receive the $10 the following week and have until Friday 8 December to put their project into action and try to make a profit.
Halloween
in Selwyn Last week Selwyn facilities hosted some Halloween events for families to enjoy the spooky season. Seventy children and their parents dressed up for the Halloween Disco at Lincoln Event Centre. The children got involved in plenty of games including find the skeleton, limbo and wrap the mummy. The disco was a safe opportunity for families to dress up and enjoy Halloween without the hassle of going door knocking. Feedback was hugely positive with children saying ‘this is the best disco ever’.

Halloween Spooktacular went down a treat at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre. Children arrived dressed up in creepy Halloween costumes for photos and festivities before enjoying a party at the pool afterwards. This was a fun, safe option for families to celebrate Halloween. The colouring in competition and decorations made for an exciting week at the Aquatic Centre with plenty of children getting involved.

This month the Council marked the 10th anniversary of the opening of its Rolleston headquarters.
Stabilised seal repairs are occurring on Springston Rolleston Road, Shands Road, Dunns Crossing Road and Weedons Road. Digout repairs will be carried out on Curve Road. Please stop on request at these sites.
The building, on Norman Kirk Drive, was officially opened in September 2007 by then GovernorGeneral, Rt Hon Sir Anand Satyanand, with staff moving into the premises in November 2007.
Footpath works will be occurring on Heathridge Place walkway and Petticoat Lane, these footpaths will be closed during these works.
The 3,000 square metre complex was designed by architect Ian Athfield and comprises four linked blocks plus a Council chamber surrounded by ample carparking and landscaped grounds. Armitage Williams Ltd was the main contractor for the project.
Kerb and channel works, footpath and kea crossing construction will be occurring on Weedons Ross Road in West Melton. Traffic delays and minor detours may be in place during the construction period. Access to the local shopping centre, pre-school and primary school will be available at all times. These works are expected to last until early December.
Council marks 10 years in Rolleston headquarters
Council Chief Executive David Ward says it was a long journey to get to the new premises. When the Council was formed in 1989, Selwyn was the only council in New Zealand that did not have the location of its head office specified by the government. “That meant that from 1989 to 2007 the Council occupied a series of buildings in Leeston, Hornby and Darfield,” Mr Ward says. “As the district’s population started to grow, it became increasingly difficult for residents to engage with the Council across two sites, and equally for staff to operate effectively over the two locations. “It was decided the logical solution was to relocate on to one site. Discussions started in January 2004 involving councillors, staff and the community, eventually settling on the Rolleston location.” The building makes extensive use of natural timber and stone both inside and out, reflecting the Selwyn landscape. It features a number of environmental features that were innovative at the time, including thermal mass flooring and exposed internal walls for temperature control, sensor-activated low-energy lighting, absorbant ceiling to reduce noise, reflective roof surface and large overhang to reduce solar gain, rainwater collected to supply toilet cisterns, and wide eaves to control glare from winter sun.

Pumpkin growing competition The Selwyn Waihora Water Zone Committee and Mayor Sam Broughton are wanting to generate discussion about the water and nutrients required to make things grow. $500 is being offered to the school which grows the largest pumpkin, and $500 to the school whose student presents the best A3 poster about water and nutrient management for growing the pumpkin.
A number of Council staff who moved into the building in November 2007 are still working in the facility 10 years later, and some of these gathered on site last week to mark the anniversary.

All over the world, libraries are transforming from their traditional focus on books and lending into community spaces that provide resources, technology and activities to encourage people to learn, participate and feel connected. Rolleston Library & Community Centre Ideas sought for new facility Development of an exciting new library and community facility for Rolleston and the wider Selwyn district is set to start in 2018 – and the Council is looking for ideas on how people might want to use the new spaces. The new Library and Community Centre is a key project in the Rolleston town centre development, and will be located on what is currently part of Rolleston Reserve, near Tennyson Street. The new facility will replace the existing library, which is now too small for Rolleston’s growing population – and will also provide a flexible, multi-use space for a wide range of community purposes. Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton says community spaces and libraries are changing. “We want our new facility to be a place of learning, idea sharing, culture and exploration. “The new facility will include a library but will be about more than just books. It will also offer flexible multi-purpose spaces for activities and exhibitions, performances, learning programmes and music. We want our community to have a place to meet, reflect and be entertained. “We will design and build the facility on the basis that it meets the needs of Selwyn residents so this is your chance to tell us what you think. The time to tell us is now.

A master plan for Rolleston town centre was adopted by the Council in 2014 after an extensive community consultation and planning process.
Through to mid-December we want to hear your ideas about what you want to do in the library and community space. Your ideas will help our designers come up with a design that reflects community aspirations.
The plan sets out a vision for a town centre that will be a vibrant and engaging destination for Rolleston, Selwyn Central ward and the wider Selwyn district. The Library and Community Centre will be the first building developed on the site, located on part of the current Rolleston Reserve, and will set the standard for later elements including: · reserve, open spaces and playgrounds · town square and civic space · indoor/outdoor dining and hospitality
· retail and entertainment areas · pedestrian-friendly streets and spaces
Since the plan was adopted, a number of steps have been completed to progress the development, including roading projects such as the Tennyson/Kidman roundabout, the development of Foster Park, adoption of the Land Use Recovery Plan designating the town centre as a key activity area, and the statutory Reserve Exchange process to enable redevelopment of part of the existing reserve. Alongside the library and community centre project, the Council is currently undertaking preliminary work to identify opportunities for retail and hospitality areas, and bringing together a design team to oversee the development. Leeston-Southbridge lead country cricket Lincoln all out for 39 LEESTON-Southbridge have maintained their lead in the Canterbury Country Cricket one-day competition by ruthlessly dispatching Lincoln on Saturday. The match at Lincoln Domain was over in a few hours after Lincoln were rolled for just 39 in the 22nd over. LeestonSouthbridge then reached the total with eight wickets in hand in the 16th over. Cameron Norton and Dougald Munro were the main destroyers for Leeston-Southbridge, bagging three wickets each as Lincoln gave away some soft dismissals. The competition’s top runscorer, Jeremy Benton, was out to a low diving catch by Liam O’Sullivan off the bowling of Norton.
No Lincoln player scored more than eight runs and their innings included four ducks. In the weekend’s other results, Weedons demolished DarfieldSouth Malvern by 161 runs at Darfield Domain. The Mockers return to Lincoln for festival By Julia Evans SELWYN SOUNDS is going to be a sort of homecoming for The Mockers. Lead singer Andrew Fagan said it’s “quite humorous” thinking about playing in the district where the band’s career started. The day-long music festival at Lincoln Domain on March 3 follows this year’s inaugural event, which saw the Jordan Luck Band, Mi-Sex, Dragon and various Kiwi heavyweights play in front of a crowd of about 8000. “The Mockers had some of their first gigs at Lincoln University,” Fagan said, fondly remembering some of the “drunk agricultural students” during orientation weeks in the early 80s. The band, which was based in Wellington at the time, would pile onto the Interislander ferry with all kinds of musical equipment in tow then get onto a train bound for a night at Lincoln’s “big, huge uni hall”. “We did some really, really long sets. We used to play the same set three times in a row. No one noticed – they were just enjoying the live music and were probably too drunk.” But he said they wouldn’t be playing the same set three times

From playing in tiny Blenheim pubs to a massive, empty Gore hall, no town was left out. “It was even better when we started to become reasonably popular and people knew the material before we started playing,” he said. He’s looking forward to recreating that in Lincoln with The Mockers original 1985 line-up of Brett Adams, Geoff Hayden and Tim Wedde. “It’ll be great playing with a lot of other bands from that period,” he said. This year’s nine-act bill will include Jimmy Barnes, Stellar and The Feelers. “I can’t wait to see if Barnsey can still hold those long, high notes in Working Class Man.” In the meantime, Fagan, who is now based in Auckland, is working on material with his other band Fagan and the People, which he’ll be recording at the end of the year.

On the 21st of November, twenty five highland dancers from the Julie Hawke School of Dance & Lynette Mitchell School of Dance in Dunedin, will travel to France to perform at The International Gathering of Highland Dance at Disneyland Paris. Now in its seventh year, The International Gathering of Scottish Highland Dance has grown into a world renowned event, with over 1000 visitors over the four days each year. The dancers will meet up with highland dancers from all around the world to compete in a 4 day competition, showcasing their highland dance skills on the international stage and also joining their fellow dancers in the Special Main Street Parade throughout Disneyland. This fantastic opportunity is being offered to Julie and Lynette’s students as both teachers believe that competing on the world stage will give their dance students an amazing, unforgetable experience and will help develop their dancing even further. The entire tour group including parents, grandparents and the dancers themselves have undertaken several fundraising projects over

the last 12 months to raise the required fund to provide each dancer with flights, accommodation, team tracksuits, stage costumes and a named ‘Carry on bag” for each dancer. The group have also secured wonderful sponsorship and from many businesses and would like to thank them immensely for their support. Both teachers, with the help of Lana Donaldson, Nadine Terry & Ruby Wills have really enjoyed the challenge of choreographing many ‘Disney themed’ solo’s, duo’s & group dances,with the added challenge of many rules covering theme of music and time restrictions. The dancers can’t wait to perform ‘Moana’. This dance is a combination of traditional Highland steps and also incorporates traditional Maori dance. This dance will be a superb performance to showcase our NZ heritage brilliantly.

Cultural values explained Solid support for motor festival SELWYN FARMERS have taken the chance to find out more about their new responsibilities around mahinga kai and how those may affect their farming practices. Environment Canterbury held the second of two on-farm “shed talks” recently, on a Dunsandel dairy farm, to explain how provisions in the Selwyn Te Waihora Water Plan to protect traditional Ngāi Tahu food sources and cultural values will affect them. The shed talks were held on properties where farmers have already undertaken significant work to protect waterways and good management practice is minimising environmental impacts. Contract milker Brendon Glassford said the previous owners of his farm planted most of the length of the stream that flows through the farm. “We want to be compliant, we don’t want to wreck the Selwyn River (Waikirikiri). We have to look after the land – you want to leave it better than when you took over,” he said. The shed talks were lead by Environment Canterbury cultural land management adviser Mananui Ramsden. He believes most farmers, like

“You can never say it’s too hard because you’ve always got support,” Mr Glassford said. He said there is ECan, DairyNZ and others to call on to help out if unsure about the environment and the regulations. Reducing nitrogen through genetics
LEESTON DAIRY farmer John Tanner has been working hard to improve sustainability on his farm, Dunlac Dairies Ltd. The farm is located in the Selwyn Waihora catchment and is 20km from Lake Ellesmere/Te Waihora, which is considered one of New Zealand’s most important wetland areas. On either side of the catchment are the Rakaia River and the Selwyn River. “In Canterbury we have to lessen our nitrogen footprint on the farm,” Mr Tanner said. He milks 730 dairy cows during the peak of the season on 260ha. “In our catchment, we farm on environmentally sensitive land,” he said. Mr Tanner is one of many farmers turning to genetic solutions to help him farm well. In recent years Lake Ellesmere/Te Waihora has been plagued by water quality issues related to intensive farming practices. Nitrogen leached from farms on the Canterbury Plains will eventually make its way into the lake therefore farm activities in the catchment are regulated by Environment Canterbury, with set nitrogen limits per farm. The Canterbury Water Management Strategy, introduced in 2012, aims to rejuvenate and restore the ecosystem of the Selwyn Waihora catchment. It requires dairy farms in the catchment to reduce their property’s nitrogen limits by 30 per cent by 2022. Mr Tanner is making an effort to reduce Dunlac Dairies’ environment impact, and has made significant improvements with water management and fertiliser usage. The farm was a finalist in the Dairy Business of the Year 2016, and Tanner takes pride in doing his bit for the environment. However, like many farmers in the region, he is feeling the pressure. “We are trying to milk at our current numbers, but lessen our nitrogen footprint. So you are trying to do the same, but with less environmental impact,” Mr Tanner said. He believes science will offer a solution for farmers. When he heard about CRV Ambreed’s genetic discovery, and its LowN Sires bull team, Mr Tan-

In March, CRV Ambreed announced a genetic discovery, thought to be a world-first, which could reduce nitrogen leaching on New Zealand farms by 20 per cent within 20 years. CRV Ambreed identified and selected bulls genetically superior for a new trait related to the amount of urea nitrogen in milk. Farmers are now able to breed cows using straws of semen from CRV Ambreed’s LowN Sires, and those daughters will have reduced concentration of milk urea nitrogen. Cows bred for lower levels of MUN are expected to excrete less nitrogen in their urine which will, in turn, reduce the amount of nitrogen leached from grazed pasture. This could potentially save New Zealand 10 million kg in nitrogen leaching a year, based on the national herd number of 6.5 million dairy cattle. “When CRV Ambreed came up with their LowN bulls, we thought ‘we’ll have a go.’” “We have 730 cows and if
we can lessen the nitrogen from the herd by 20 per cent, then that makes a big dent,” Mr Tanner said. He is interested to see how his herd’s genetics will improve over time. “I know it’s going to take a few years, but if it’s something that does improve nitrogen leaching from my cows, I will probably buy more straws in the future,” he said. Tanner was also pleased with the other traits. “We wanted the best in genetics, and CRV offered that,” Mr Tanner said. Canterbury regional councillor John Sunckell was also a big fan of CRV Ambreed’s LowN Sires programme. Mr Sunckell is a thirdgeneration farmer from Leeston. “Technology and information is vital; that’s why I’m so excited about (CRV Ambreed R&D scientist) Phil Beatson’s work and CRV’s work,” said Mr Sunckell. Mr Sunckell said dairy farmers in his catchment are required to reduce their nitrogen loss by 30 “which equates to getting rid of every third cow.”

The life of a monarch Mike Bowie is an ecologist who specialises in entomology (insects and other invertebrates). Each week he introduces a new species found in his backyard at Lincoln. His column aims to raise public awareness of biodiversity, the variety of living things around us
ico, travelling 120km per day. It is the only butterfly in the world known to undertake a return migration, even though it may take several generations to do so. However, in New Zealand, monarchs don’t migrate or travel so far, but like their overseas relatives, they hibernate over winter in large groups. In Christchurch, monarchs overwinter in tall trees at several sites including Abberley Park, Centennial Park, St James Park, the Pioneer Recreation and Sports Centre
playground, Linwood Cemetery, Redwood Park, Woodham Park and Bishopdale Park. Overwintering is triggered when air temperature drops below 13 deg C for two days. In spring, eggs are laid on milkweeds, including the swan plant, and take four to 10 days to hatch. Larva take between nine and 20 days to pupation and adults emerge from pupae 10 to 28 days later. Male monarchs have a black spot (scent gland) on each of their hind wings and have thinner veins than females.
THE LARGEST and arguably the most well-known butterfly in New Zealand is the monarch (sanaus plexippus). The monarch arrived in New Zealand around 1873, having migrated across the Pacific from North America via islands along the way. The longest insect migration record of 3432km is held by a female which flew from Canada to Mex-

School gets defibrillator
By Georgia O’ConnorHarding CALLS FOR a new automated external defibrillator by nearly 50 parents at a school in Rolleston has paid off. West Rolleston Primary School received a a device through a national campaign ran by Heart Saver New Zealand and Cigna. The AED 7000 was donated by Heart Saver, Cigna and Grown Ups. It comes after several near misses in the community prompted 47 parents to make submissions for the device through the Become a Heart Saver campaign. About six weeks ago resident Melissa Sole suffered a cardiac arrest while feeding her baby on her bed. Her husband Aaron Sole arrived home to find her unresponsive and gasping for air and provided CPR until the paramedics arrived with an AED and were able to restart her pulse. Principal Sylvia Fidow said it was exciting for the school to receive and the device would be made available to both the school and wider community. The school was already

looking into fundraising for an AED when a parent mentioned the Become a Heart Saver competition. “All of our staff have been trained in first aid so it is exciting to know we will have that resource,” Ms Fidow said. Ms Fidow said there are issues in terms of getting an attachment for the defibrillator, which will likely be an additional $700 to make it easily accessible to the community. West Rolleston Primary school opened last year and have 324 children, 16 teachers and 10 support staff. It
supports a satellite branch of Waitaha Special School with 16 children who have special learning needs. The nearest AED to the school is a 10min drive away. From Thursday 9 November Airways New Zealand, the Board of Airline Representatives New Zealand (BARNZ), Christchurch Airport and New Southern Sky will run a 12-month flight paths trial, which will involve approximately 25% of arrivals (landings) into Christchurch. The trial will gather data to be used in the progressive upgrade from

The new navigation procedures are more accurate and allow for shorter, more direct routes, as well as more efficient take-offs and landings. November is a great time to plant tomatoes outside, as the weather is more settled now. Prepare the ground 2 to 3 weeks before planting. Dig in good compost and remove any weeds. While you are there, check that the soil is not too dry. The best site to grow tomatoes is one that has plenty of sun, shelter from cold winds, and access to a good water supply (but has good drainage too). Tomatoes are gross feeders, meaning they will need a lot of nutrients through the growing season. At planting time, incorporate fertilisers such as Intelligro Tomato Fertiliser or Nitrophoska. Hold on to the fertiliser, you will need this through the season.

Three travel prize draws for early entries in dairy industry awards Entries in the 2018 New Zealand Share Farmer of the Year, Dairy Manager of the Year and Dairy Trainee of the Year competitions are now being accepted online at www.dairyindustryawards.co.nz. Entries close on November 30. All those that enter before midnight on November 9 will go into the *Early Bird Entry Prize Draw and be in with a chance to win a share of $9000 in travel vouchers. One travel voucher will be given to an early entrant in each competition. There are three prize draws in total. “We think the Early Bird Entry Prize Draw of travel vouchers are one way we can help dairy farmers take a break and have some fun,” awards general manager Chris Keeping says. “Rural mental health has been in the spotlight lately, and this early bird travel prize acknowledges that farming is a 24/7 career. Best practice dairy farming programme endorsed by regional council Synlait Milk’s Lead With PrideTM programme is the first independent programme in the New Zealand agricultural industry to become an approved audit management system. The first of its kind in Australasia, Lead With PrideTM encourages best practice dairy farming. “It is our flagship programme. It puts into action the things that really matter to us by partnering with our milk suppliers to use best practice to look after animals, protect the environment and care for people on farm. Of course it also focuses on food safety and the quality of the milk our suppliers produce,” Synlait’s managing director and CEO John Penno says. Lead With PrideTM has been run by Synlait for five years and ensures milk suppliers meet prescribed requirements for environment, milk quality, animal health and welfare, and social responsibility. This approval means that Environment Canterbury has confidence in the systems being run on Synlait’s certified Lead With PrideTM farms. As a result, these farms are less likely to face additional compliance inspections by Environment Canterbury as they meet auditing standards through Lead With PrideTM. Environment Canterbury is the regional council responsible for a wide variety of functions, including environmental
monitoring, regional biosecurity, and the issuing of permits and consents. “This is fantastic news for Synlait as it shows Environment Canterbury recognises the integrity of our programme and the high standards we have for our certified Lead With PrideTM milk suppliers,” says Mr Penno. “We set a high benchmark five years ago and we’re beginning to see the industry recognise that we are well ahead of the
game.” Environment Canterbury chief executive, Bill Bayfield, says this is the first time an independent party has had such an agreement with a regional council. “We’re really pleased to have this approval in place with Synlait. By working in partnership in this way there will be better outcomes for farmers and for water quality in the region.” To get the approval, Synlait had to submit
an application and supporting evidence to prove that milk suppliers certified under the Lead With PrideTM programme have sufficient control of their operation so that additional farm audits are no longer required. Synlait currently has 50 Lead With PrideTM milk suppliers, and it is expected this will grow to more than a third of Synlait’s supply base by the end of the financial year.

New Zealand’s countryside showcased in new exhibition Two New Zealand artists feature in the latest exhibition at Selwyn Gallery – Charles Pickworth and Simon Kramer. Pickworth was born in Dunedin, New Zealand, and brought up in Central Otago, and later in Oamaru. He contracted polio at the age of four and lost the use of one arm. In addition, he suffers from asthma and has worked at a variety of jobs. Through his 35 years of painting Pickworth has come to realise that this is what he wants to do most of all. He is a self-taught artist and paints full time. He prefers painting plein-air and travels frequently searching out new subjects, specialising nowadays in South Island scenes. He paints mostly in oils, occasionally in acrylics, and has the knack of capturing the mood and wonderful range of colours in South Island scenery. He has a bright and enthusiastic nature and enjoys sharing his love of painting with established and budding artists. Kramer is a professional artist, who started painting in 1985. He is a veteran of outdoor painting and has painted hundreds of locations in the New Zealand countryside. He is proficient in any painting medium and produces works for sale in oils, watercolour, and acrylics. He also runs
a boutique framing business and lectures on art through classes and workshops. About his own work, Kramer says: “As an outdoor artist I see the beauty of God’s creation and realise anything I do is inspired by his ideas. He is the original artist, and my inspiration. I know the value he has placed in every one of us, and believe the human spirit is the only sacred thing on earth today. “I find our influence on nature and each other fascinating, and sometimes heartbreaking. I have included some of our

“Home away from Home” is part of the philosophy of the West Melton Kindergarten, Nursery and Learning Centre, where a respectful, fun, learning environment is provided for children. There is a balance between routine, structure and children’s free play. The attractive purpose-built centre caters for children three months to six years in four separate sections – the Nursery for under twos, Kindy for two and three yearolds, the Learning Centre for children approximately three and three-quarters to six years old, and a Before and After School Programme for West Melton Primary school children. All the permanent teachers are qualified, registered ECE teachers, who are passionate about working with children and their families. The centre received an excellent ERO report. Primary caregiving by key teachers ensures nursery children develop strong, secure relationships giving them the confidence to explore the environment and develop their independence. Throughout the centre, key teachers plan for individual children’s interests and needs. Teachers
nurture and support each child as they travel on their learning path. The large, expansive grass and barked outdoor environment has enough space to encourage small group play and provides areas where children can use their imagination with a range of openended equipment to adapt the area to suit – rockets, planes, etc. while still allowing space for a mini game of rugby for the All Black fans. A separate bike track, under trees, keeps the bikes away from the main play areas. The indoor areas are spacious, well laid out and resourced. Children are supported in the dispositions of exploration, problem solving, negotiating, persisting, caring and respecting in a fun learning environment. 20 hours ECE is available for children aged three and over. The Before School Programme opens at 7.30am and the children are escorted to school at 8.30am. The After School Programme runs from 3pm-5.45pm. During that time afternoon tea is provided and children receive support with their homework. Parents and caregivers are welcome to

A fresh approach to physio A young team with a fresh approach is providing a different type of physiotherapy treatment at PhysioSteps in West Melton. As physiotherapist Caitlin Clark explains, it is treatment for the whole patient, treating the source of the injury, not just the symptoms. “This means that we fix the injury at its source, to prevent you from returning
again with the same injury. We do this by completing a thorough assessment, fully explaining the injury and then make a plan with the patient as to how it will be managed and how long it will take. “We emphasise self-management, with physiotherapy guidance, ensuring the injury improves as quickly and as well as possible.” Research has shown the effectiveness of an exercise-based approach to physiotherapy treatment, Caitlin says, helping patients be fully engaged in their rehab process and speeding up recovery. In their purpose-built clinic in Weedons Ross Road, the physiotherapists Kayla Marshall, Caitlin Clark and Shaun Clark provide treatment for musculoskeletal (muscles and joints) injuries, sports injuries, as well as pain management and occupational health/ergonomics advice. They are HDANZ accredited and contracted to ACC, which means they are audited and comply with the national standards set out for physiotherapy.

Lincoln South & Lincoln Primary Proposed Enrolment Scheme Home Zone changes Effective 1 January 2019 In order to avoid the likelihood of future overcrowding, the establishment board of Lincoln South Primary School proposes to adopt an enrolment scheme, effective from the date of opening on 1 January 2019. Consequential amendment to the enrolment scheme of Lincoln Primary School is also proposed to take effect from this date.
